Some of you may have read my post a few days ago detailing how:
1. A friend ripped my mirror apart at the ball socket pictured above.
2. In trying to force the socket back on the ball, I cracked the windshield.
3. I don't have glass coverage on my poor-person's insurance.
Well, today I decided to go and google "how to remove donnelly (brand) rear view mirror." As it turns out, this thing has a spring in it, and semi-easily detaches from the windshield if you stick a screwdriver in the access hole on the bottom and push the spring away from the metal mount glued to the windshield.
In my infinite wisdom, I decided to force the socket on this ball when it was still attached to the windshield, creating an 8'' spiderweb crack I am too ashamed to post a picture of.
Note to smart jalops (oppo-ers?): Don't use force around glass.
As it turns out, even with the ball off the windshield, there's no way in hell this socket is going back on this ball without breaking the mirror glass. Fortunately, I was able to find a new (better) mirror, from the same OEM supplier, Donnelly:
Taken from the esteemed 2000 Chevy Lumina, this dual lighted mirror represents the pinnacle of automotive design. It also happens to cost $20 shipped, which is cheaper than a replacement stock mirror.
Tomorrow, the new glass goes in (no blue tint on top), for $140+tax. This week, the new mirror arrives. I'll have to make a post about the minor electrical work it'll take to hook this baby up.
Update: New glass is on. $154 including labor, and it took 45 minutes. Called them yesterday, so that was quick.

Just take it as a lesson learned, and let others know. Most mirrors are attached like this to the win shield,I only know about this because I had car that it just fell off, and had to reglue it so you have to pop the little mounting point off the re glue it, that's a pita too. So sounds like you still need to re glue your mirror back on? Safelight didn't ? Usually they are pre glued on and you slide your old mirror on I thought.
We'll read this if you have to very helpfull.

You comment on your poor person's insurance w/o glass coverage...my glass coverage still has a $250 deductible unless I let them try to repair the chip which is 100% covered.

Mine is $285, which happens to be the exact same price Safelite charged me for a replacement without the claim. Stupid insurance.

Last time I got a bulls eye from a rock. I called my insurance company to find out if it was covered. It was. Then I asked if a claim would affect my rate. After some run around, I found out it would cost me $10 a month for a year. $120. I paid for the repair out of pocket.

Cheaper than OEM! OEM manufacturer!
I'm pretty excited to install it. There's an archived miata.net post where someone did the exact same thing. Apparently there's a way to wire it so it will turn on when you open the doors (with the roof mounted map light) and also when you press the buttons. The post didn't detail how to do it, so if I can figure it out I'll be sure to document it somewhere.
The only downside is my car will weigh a few ounces more.
